Re: Gentoo on Samsung N510

You're welcome. So I will have to check this video thing, too...
Please post any findings!

Re: Gentoo on Samsung N510

Hi Brezell,

find attached the kernel config I am currently using. Please note, that I also applied the backlight patch from archlinux.

I tested video with Skype, and it works.

Ciao,

Jens

Re: Gentoo on Samsung N510

OK, i tried this patch and backlight control now works! I still have to configure the Fn keys, but that should not be a problem... BTW, gentoo dropped KDE 3.5 packages and with this knetworkmanager. As I could not find any good replacement, I kept the old ebuild and it works here on KDE 4.3. But if ...

Re: Gentoo on Samsung N510 - Backlight hope?

I stumbled over this one:

http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=655144

So there is hope, it seems. Will check.

PS: The BIOS update itself appearently changed nothing, after restoring my backup everything works (and something works not) like before...

Re: Gentoo on Samsung N510

OK, I was blocked a bit both by private life and by this ***** BIOS update thing... To make it short: For N510 I would recommend to keep the Windows install, shrinking the partition to 20GB. It's a sacrifice, but if you do not need every GB it will make life easier. I did not try the dos usb boot me...

Re: Gentoo on Samsung N510

OK, just for the records: nvidia-settings will compile only, if you add the following symlink in:
/usr/include/X11/extensions
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 11 8 nov 16:42 xf86vmproto.h -> xf86vmode.h

It's only a workaround, but better than wait for a fix. It's already filed in the gentoo bug database.

Re: Gentoo on Samsung N510

Whilst preparing me to setup a virtualbox for windows in order to unpack the new BIOS Samsung released for the N510 (hopefully addresses the same BIOS issues as for the NC10, that is the backlight ACPI functions), gentoo developers went stable with KDE4.3. While this is good news for the guys that k...

Re: HOWTO: Update the BIOS/MICOM using DOS

Do you have any idea how to accomplish this for N510? There seem to be a new version out for this one, too: http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/detail/supportPrdDetail.do?menu=SP01&prd_ia_cd=05012400&prd_mdl_cd=&prd_mdl_name=NP-N510 I already fail to unpack the exe, seems not to be a selfe...

Re: Gentoo on Samsung N510

Hi denisjhon, welcome on gentoo board then ;-). One curiosity: can you please check, if on your install /proc/acpi/video contains some files and if so what they contain? And another question: why did you choose 64Bit? ??? I thought, the Atom N280 does not support it ??? It's true also that gentoo de...

Re: Gentoo on Samsung N510

After it's out, I will give a try to the Ubuntu 9.10 live CD, just to see what works and which modules are loaded.

BTW, did you manage the volume control to get working through FN keys? Does this work out of the box with jaunty?

Re: Gentoo on Samsung N510

I went some step ahead. I do not post detailed configuration info yet, because it's still work in progress. Anyway, here the good news : - With the new XServer 1.6 (part of gentoo stable now), suspend to RAM works fine, it seems. Please follow the upgrade guides (read the news with "eselect new...

Re: Gentoo on Samsung N510

OK, besides of my work and private life I had little time to go ahead. Anyway, just to continue: It seems, that nvidia ION chipsets currently are not fully supported as far as /proc/acpi/video settings is concerned (the dir is always empty). I am not sure, who should add this support: some linux ker...

OK, now I read your repository comments, if I understand right there are ubuntu patches and your changed fdi, correct? So I'll have to diff the ubuntu patches with my gentoo package - I need good luck...

Re: Multitouch?

Is the only patch to this driver the different fdi? Or did you change also something in the sources (and if so: what?)? I'd like to reproduce your steps for my gentoo installation, dmesg says that the touchpad of N510 is exactly the same: patbook ~ # dmesg | grep Synaptics [ 1.615668] Synaptics Touc...

Re: Gentoo on Samsung N510

Well, actually I did not use it really yet, I am still stuck with installation (and I did not play around with windows, just wiped it away ;D ). But I think for who does not need high CPU performance, its a good compromise and the display is surely useable also for longer sessions. KDE 4.2 looks goo...
