I've installed 11.04. Fn keys (with brightness) were working as in 10.04 on my R510 (nv). (althoug with the same issue with lower value being below "on" state of the backlit). Today - when I've downloaded some updates (with 2.6.38-9 kernel image) - all Fn keys work but not the backlit keys...

At the beginning I'd like to thank for great work on samsung-tools. Using the same laptop model (R510) equipped with nvidia video card I've got exactly the same issue. I feel like there is something wrong with backlit step values (I can't see the difference between maximum and one step lower value)....
