Touchpad on Samsung serie 7 NP740U3E

Post by fenshu »

Hello, I m a new linuxer on samsung, thanks for your forum !
I installed Ubuntu 12.10 on my Samsung NP740 3 days ago...
Everything is working except :
-Mutlitouch on touchpad (but one finger work)
-Multitouch on touchscreen (but one finger work)

About the touch pad:
Xinput list say that :
⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ ELAN Touchscreen id=11 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ PS/2 Generic Mouse id=13 [slave pointer (2)]

So it seems the touchpad is just recognized as a generic mouse...
I installed samsung tools ( few minutes ago) but i dont see anything about touchpad (just light, wifi, webcam, fan..)

Do you have any idea how to make works this touchpad with two fingers or more... ?

Thank you !

Hi

I have the same configuration, N740U3E, and I am having the same issue. I am also having problems with the SD Card reader, it worked on Windows 8, but it is not recognized on ubuntu 12.10. Can you confirm that yours is working? Thanks a lot!

I too spent way to many hours trying to get multitouch to work on my 740. It is really annoying as the clickpad doesn't really allow both mouse buttons to be clicked at the same time for 3rd button mouse emulation. I have to use shift-insert instead for pasting between my browser and xterms.

The bug has been reported many times, I believe the problems are two fold.

1. There was never full support anyways, as you had to patch the kernel in order to get the elan touchpads to use the synaptics X driver.

2. The 740 along with some other newish samsungs have a newer hardware version (v.7?) of the touchpad, so the old patch does not work anymore. It is an odd beast anyways as the touch pad has 2 separate input devices, one like you would normally expect and another that only really outputs data during a multitouch scenario. I don't think the bug is considered high priority and it will really take an upstream fix to resolve this. :/

Good news, looks like there is a patch for elan v7 touchpads:

https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commi ... 20b60de68c

I confirmed it works on kernels 3.9.3 and 3.10.0. I now have 2 finger scrolling, button emulation, the whole works. My xinput now lists "ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad".

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1166442

Looks like it should hit upstream by 3.11 or 3.12.

Is keyboard backlight working for you? If yes, have you installed Ubuntu in UEFI or CSM mode?
What is your current BIOS version?

Thanks!

Hi,

I managed to get the touchpad working with multitouch in Arch using the driver from the third comment (brenix) here: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/psmouse-elantech/

Hope that helps. Also for the SD card reader as I said in this post I had to edit some values and recompile: http://www.voria.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1212

The backlight for me works automatically although I wish I could control it with the keyboard shortcuts, My installation is through uefi
