sorry my english is not so good. I have a Samsung N220. And after all changes and reboot the system the backlight is sometimes are blingking.
Then I can't change brightness step by step.
I have installed netbook edition 10.10., bootloader grub2,
What should i do?

My N148 Plus blinks sometimes too.

Hi I have successfully solved the backlight problems of my N148 with the acpi vendor stuff but now sometimes the backlight goes crazy (on/off) for 30 sec or so... seem like something else is trying to control it...
any suggestions?

With the kernel 2.6.35-24.43~ppa1~loms~maverick and samsung-backlight 0.13.3~ppa1~loms~maverick on Xubuntu 10.10, on my Samsung NF310, I cannot set the brightness step by step, only the min or max brightness, with the keyboard or writing in /sys/class/backlight/samsung/brightness.
When I read from /sys/class/backlight/samsung/brightness, the value is always 0 or 7, and when it stays idle on power, it starts to blink.

In fact, writing in /sys/class/backlight/samsung/brightness works in a console (outside X), it's only under X that something seems to force the brightness to either 0 or 7, nothing between!

On the NF210, this just removes the functionality of the brightness buttons. In other words, without the line it would at least bring up the dialog. It now takes no action.

If your blue buttons are going crazy, did you edit the files to put the polling for your netbook?

Without that edit you will have hilariously spazzy reactions to the Fn keys; it's to do with the OS not providing the release.

All these edits seem already done in the udev package from the Voria PPA.

I had a similar problem on R580. The login screen was fine, but after login the desktop was very dark. I tried the different fixes suggested on this forum and elsewhere - no luck

I resolved the problem simply by downloading the proprietary Nvidia driver (using jockey-gtk).

first of all, thanks for your support, everyone. I would be in the greatest distress having to do all of this by myself !

But I am experciencing a weird issue with the posted fix ; everything was working fine until I had the idea to close the lid of my netbook (N210), and to re-open it - note that my system is set not to activate the sleep mode when the lid is closed, so closing the lid does nothing except protecting the screen. So when I opened the lid again, the screen was blinking, in fact it was switching from one level of brightness to another several times a second, the indicator appearing normally on the right-top corner of the screen. It went like this for thirty seconds, with me trying to mess with the brightness controls, hoping to fix this by myself, and it eventually stopped. The second time I tried not to do anything, and it stopped about fifteen seconds later. The third time, it went for two minutes, as I tried desperately to find a fix, still messing with the brightness keys...

...so ?! What the hell ?! It's a funny problem but a bit annoying and I think it's not good for the backlight itself... any idea ? Thanks.

PS : 10.10, grub2, any need of other details ?

It doesn't seem to stop at all now. Last time the whole display became buggy... the gnome panel at the bottom didn't display the application buttons anymore, I had to reboot... weird issue indeed ! I fear my backlight is going to die prematurely. :/

Edit : It happened again, but I let it go this time just to see ; it lasted eighty seconds, then stopped by itself.

I have also the same problem of the brightness control going crazy on my N230. There must be something else trying to control the brightness...any idea? The way I stop the crazy behaviour is by trying to change the volume. Don't know why, but if I start pressing Fn + left or right arrow, then it stops. Does it work the same for you?

I am new to linux and ubuntu, and I have the same problem (flickering backlight after fix) on my N210...

I registered to this forum because of this, I hope anyone can help us out here..

@marcio : doesn't work for me, but I found another way to stop it : one click on the menu button.

I was able to stop the flickering also by adjusting the volume.

When I disable the 'dim display when idle' option in the power management display, the flickering doesn't return. Although this may not be the way it should, it works for me just now..
