Hi,

I might be wrong but it looked to me like samsung-backlight support not only netbooks but also
some notebooks. I have a R780 running Ubuntu Lucid (64 bits).

Code: Select all

$ sudo dmidecode -s system-manufacturer
SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO., LTD.
$ sudo dmidecode -s system-product-name
R780/R778

The package samsung-tools works as it added support for the Fn keys.
I am getting trouble with the backlight.

The GPU on R780 is GeForce GT 330M (chip GT 216)

Code: Select all

$ lspci |grep nVidia
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT216 [GeForce GT 330M] (rev a2)

The command

Code: Select all

echo 6 > /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/samsung/brightness

has no effect. The Fn+Up/Down keys relate to gnome-power-manager with no effect on actual brightness either.

I had a look at the mactel ppa (https://launchpad.net/~mactel-support/+archive/ppa) that provides the package nvidia-bl-dkms (I used version 0.16.10~lucid). With that I succeed to get control over brightess using the command

Code: Select all

echo 1000 > /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/nvidia_backlight/brightness

Unfortunately, I could not link this to the Fn keys for control.

Here are my questions:
Does samsung-backlight work with some nVidia cards?
Do you have any suggestion?
Do you think support for R780 could be added to the project?
Thanks in advance.

Finally backlight works perfectly if I remove the module samsung-backlight (that is apparently made for intel GPUs) and I use the nvidia-bl module from mactel ppa, loaded with parameters: max_level=0x1ffff shift=11.
Then I get full control of the brightness with the Fn keys.
samsung-tools is perfect for Samsung R780 too.
Congratulations for your work!

Samsung R528 is fully supported,

FN + F2 = Power Information
FN + F3 = Webcam on/off
FN + F5 = Backlight off
FN + F6 = Sound off
FN + F9 = WiFi on/off
FN + F10 = Touchpad on/off
FN + ESC = Sleep
FN + Uparrow key = Bright Up
FN + DownArrow = Bright Down
FN + Leftkey = Sound Low
FN + RightKey = Sound High

Just have to add "acpi_vendor=backlight" argument in grub for brightness thing working .
Fan/processor speed also working

Well, I managed to install nvidia_bl module, but Fn+Up/Down doesn't change the backlight level. Could you please describe in more details, how it should be configured?

.......

All is working, just reboot and add to the /etc/modules nvidia_bl max_level=0x1ffff shift=11

Great!

(Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on R780)

Everytime the kernel updates, I have to change the settings manually for 320/P320. Can you add official support for this model? Thanks.
