I can confirm the samsung-laptop and UEFI installation thing.
First hand information would be with the kernel commits, if you feel like digging a little.

Hi,
I'm guessing you installed linux in EFI mode. It appears that the samsung-laptop module is not loaded when the kernel finds an EFI installation.
The most obvious thing to do, if you want fan control now, is to reinstall linux in BIOS mode. Otherwise you can try and wait until someone fixes the ...

Just today, I decided to give it a go and switch my N900-X4C to UEFI.
I came back from a safe install of both openSuse 13.1 and ubuntu 13.10... According to what I gathered, Ubuntu 12.04.3 seems to be safe as well, even though I haven't tested it.
